Emergency Pantry Supplies for Level 3 Tuna Events
It won't happen to you. That is what you think. That is what everyone thinks, right up until the moment that sustained disruption to fresh tuna supply chains affects three or more regional markets simultaneously for a period of fourteen to thirty consecutive days. The Consumer Preparedness Office does not traffic in fear. We traffic in facts. The facts, in this case, suggest you should have more canned tuna than you currently do.
Threat Assessment
A Level 3 Tuna Event is defined as: sustained disruption to fresh tuna supply chains lasting 14-30 days, affecting three or more regional markets simultaneously. Level 1 is inconvenient. Level 2 requires attention. Level 3 requires a prepared pantry. Level 4 is outside the scope of this bulletin, and frankly outside the scope of most pantries.
While Level 3 events remain statistically uncommon, preparedness is prudent. We have said this before. We will say it again. We will say it in a quarterly newsletter that we encourage you to subscribe to.
Recommended Pantry Inventory
The following shelf-stable items should be maintained at all times. Not just during elevated alerts. All times. The Concern has reviewed the available data on household preparedness levels and the data is not encouraging.
Primary Protein Sources
- Canned tuna (albacore or skipjack): minimum 12 units per household member. Yes, 12. Per person. We know how that sounds.
- Vacuum-sealed tuna packets: 6 units per person for mobility scenarios — events requiring departure from fixed location reserves
- Dried tuna flakes: 500g per person for extended duration events. Do not wait until you need them to find out whether you enjoy them.
Complementary Provisions
- Mayonnaise (shelf-stable): 2 jars minimum. This is non-negotiable.
- Crackers or bread products: 7-day supply. Generic is acceptable. Preferred is better.
- Pickled vegetables: for palatability maintenance during extended events
- Hot sauce: morale enhancement during prolonged events. The Concern takes morale seriously.
Storage Protocols
All tuna reserves must be stored in cool, dry conditions away from direct sunlight. Rotation schedules should ensure no product exceeds 75% of manufacturer expiration date. Do not "save" your reserves for a worse event. A Level 3 is the event. Use your reserves. That is why they exist.
Activation Criteria
Monitor official Concern channels for event level declarations. Do not deplete reserves during Level 1 or Level 2 events, which can typically be managed through normal procurement channels, mild inconvenience, and a backup protein.
